Visitors arrive with different habits. Some scan a QR code and start listening in the browser. Others prefer a native app. For people who already use ChatGPT, the Classic Audioguide plugin adds another way to access the audioguide through an assistant they know.
The plugin is a visitor feature. Its purpose is to connect people with Classic Audioguide during their exploration of an exhibition, rather than to manage an exhibition or produce its content.
Why offer a ChatGPT plugin?
A familiar interface can make a new service easier to approach. Visitors who prefer interacting through an AI assistant can connect to Classic Audioguide there, while people who want to start directly can continue using the existing visitor guide.
The benefit is choice: an additional entry point for visitors with different preferences. A museum does not need to make ChatGPT a requirement for everyone who wants to hear its stories.
What does the MCP server do?
The connection uses MCP, short for Model Context Protocol. It provides a shared way for compatible AI assistants to connect to a service. The Classic Audioguide MCP server is the connection behind the ChatGPT plugin and can also be used by other compatible assistants.
For visitors, the acronym is secondary. What matters is being able to reach the audioguide through their preferred interface. The capabilities available in an assistant depend on the tools the connection provides; MCP does not automatically give an assistant every feature of the native app.
Keep the direct route to listening
The ChatGPT plugin complements the existing visitor experience. QR access, the web audioguide, and native app options remain useful for visitors who want to go straight to the guide.
When introducing the plugin at a venue, present it as an additional option alongside the usual visitor link. Keep the instructions short and test the actual visitor journey before adding it to exhibition signage.
